Payday loans
Every day on ITV there are advertisements for short term loans, borrow now, -pay later. The temptation is there to borrow. The loan is only for a short time and could be for a present, the purchase of clothes or to pay off a bill. Some appeal to a specific group, for example WONGA appeals to older people, others concentrate on young mothers who may be under pressure to supply clothing for their children.
The envelope arrived with black lettering NSPCC. The appeal was for clothing, books and bric a brac. Reading the text gave the impression that any money raised would go to the NSPCC. Not so! The items would be sent to Eastern Europe for sale. Only a small amount of the money would go to the charity, the bulk to the commercial company running the operation. Two days later there was a similar envelope offering disabled children trips to Disney. If only these companies were open. Nowhere is it revealed who has benefited, nor what profit the commercial operation is making.
2011 sees the celebration of the King James Bible a text that is discribed as changing the world. The King James Bible was the first text written in English and was to become the most widely distributed and read book throughout the English speaking countries. Before printing was invented, scribes had to copy the bible books by hand without making mistakes. It was a difficult job requiring lots of concentration. it took 7 years to complete the writings. the word Bible actually means Library, it was a library of some 40 writers who wrote the text as we have it today.
How much is Change’ needed to form the future? Can our lives survive without it?
‘The future is shaped, for better or worse, by the choices people make today. Ideas and choices are the great engines of change; they drive history forward. A simple creative idea which has some widely-needed application can propel an unknown person to world prominence overnight. And individual choices, even those made by insignificant people, can alter situation and events, sometimes on a huge scale. Often, the changes are felt many miles away, or years into the future.
